THICK fog triggered traffic pileups in different parts of China yesterday, leaving nine people dead and dozens injured, local authorities said.

Collisions involving more than 50 vehicles killed six people and injured 17 others early yesterday on an expressway near Anqing City in eastern China's Anhui Province, said a traffic police spokesman.

A 13-car pileup in heavy fog killed three people and injured nine others on an expressway near Chenzhou City in central China's Hunan Province.

There was another pileup involving more than 20 vehicles on an expressway near Xuchang City in Henan Province, injuring dozens of people.

Thick fog led to the temporary closure of expressways in eastern Zhejiang Province and southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
