9 missing as Chinese ship sinks

A JAPANESE coastguard patrol boat yesterday joined a search for nine crew members missing from a Chinese-registered ship which sank off the coast of Japan, a coastguard official said.
Five crew members have been rescued from the 238-ton Lurongyu 2859, which sank on Tuesday morning off Shimane prefecture in the country’s southwest.
The helicopter-carrying Japanese coastguard vessel Daisen arrived at the scene, some 390 kilometers north of Shimane‘s Oki islands, around midday yesterday.
The vessel is presumed to be a fishing boat but its port of origin and the identities of its crew are not known.
The official said the Japanese Coast Guard was responding to a request from China‘s search and rescue centre.
Two North Korean ships were also on their way to join the operation, the official said.
