9 people killed, 3 missing in heavy rains

HEAVY rains across the country have left at least nine people dead and three others missing, the National Meteorological Center said yesterday.
In central China’s Hunan Province, two people were killed and 6,555 people had to be relocated when downpours caused flooding, power cuts and landslides.
In central China’s Hubei Province, rain, hail and gales left one person dead and two people missing, and caused an estimated 45 million yuan (US$7 million) worth of damage.
In east China’s Jiangxi Province, heavy rains led to three deaths and the relocation of 14,000 people. About 500 houses were destroyed and the direct economic loss has been estimated at 740 million yuan.
In south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, one person was reported killed and another missing after heavy rain battered seven cities.
A total of 12,200 people were relocated, more than 1,000 houses were damaged and losses totaled 278 million yuan.
Rivers in the affected provinces are swollen and flood warnings have been issued.
The meteorological center on Monday warned people in the northwest and south of the country to be alert to the possibility of mountain torrents, mud-rock flows and landslides as rain continues to lash these regions.
Meanwhile, power supplies in Guangxi were reinstated yesterday after two days of blackouts.
The grid was damaged when rivers in Yangshuo and Pingnan counties swelled after persistent rainstorms, officials said.
Floods and rainwater also gushed into the streets in Yangshuo’s county seat.
Many scenic spots also suffered waterlogging.
Yangshuo is known for its picturesque karst peaks and turquoise Lijiang River.
No casualties have been reported, but more than 100 houses collapsed and 292 roads, two harbors and nine bridges were damaged.
Schoolchildren had a day off on Monday, and all scenic resorts suspended business.
The Guangxi Power Grid said it carried out emergency repairs to 34 power lines over the past two days to resume electricity supply. Local authorities have mobilized people to help drain and treat water.
