9 perish as truck crashes into bus

NINE people were killed and seven seriously injured after a bus collided with a heavy-duty truck in Hotan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday, local authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 12:20am when a bus with 33 cotton-picking workers aboard crashed head-on into a truck on a desert road while traveling from Aksu to Hotan, the Hotan prefecture government said in a statement.

Four bus passengers died instantly and five died at the People's Hospital of Hotan after medical treatment failed. Another seven were critically injured, the statement said.

Traffic police said snow and heavy fog had reduced visibility in the area to less than 100 meters. An initial investigation showed the truck was in the wrong lane at the time of the accident.

Xinjiang regional work safety officials are still investigating the accident.

Separately, 12 people have been confirmed dead and five others are missing after a bus fell into a river in Qamdo, the Tibet Autonomous Region, local government said yesterday.

The bus, carrying 19 people including the driver, fell into the Zaqu River in Cerwai Town on Tuesday.

Two people, including the bus driver, were slightly injured, according to the emergency response office under the government of Qamdo prefecture.

Rescuers are searching for the missing passengers along the river.
