9 terror suspects shot dead in Xinjiang
NINE suspected terrorists were killed and another captured in Hotan Prefecture of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday afternoon, the regional police authority said.
The group had been identified by police on July 27 during an investigation into a terrorist gang.
Local civilians volunteered to help the police track down the suspects and just after midnight on Thursday they were spotted in a cornfield in Purgakqi Township.
With the help of more than 30,000 volunteers, officers chased the suspects to an abandoned house, where they resisted arrest by throwing explosives into the crowd. Police fired back, killing nine of them and capturing one.
There were no police or civilian casualties, officials said.
Xinjiang has been beset for years by deadly attacks launched by Islamist militants or separatists.
Hundreds have been killed in Xinjiang in the past year and a half, and the past few days have seen a series of deadly incidents.
