92 kids rescued in human trafficking bust

CHINESE police have rescued 92 children and two women from human traffickers and arrested 301 people in one of the biggest busts of its kind in years.

Gang members gave newborn babies sleeping pills to stop them crying while they were being transported, China Central Television reported yesterday. Some babies slept for several days after being given the drugs.

The rescued children were mostly newborns or between one and two years old, the report said.

Police simultaneously swooped on locations in 11 provinces on September 11, following a six-month investigation, CCTV and the Xinhua news agency reported, quoting the Ministry of Public Security.

No reason was given for the delay in reporting the operation.

The reports did not give a breakdown of the number of boys and girls rescued.

A traditional preference for boys, especially in rural areas, and a strict one-child policy have contributed to a rise in the trafficking of children and women in recent years. Kidnapped women are sold to men in remote areas unable to find brides.

The one-child policy has also encouraged sex-selective abortions among the rural women.

The government is to impose harsher punishment on people who buy kidnapped children, CCTV said.

Xinhua said the government would also punish parents who sell their children.

In 2011, the Ministry of Public Security said  police rescued more than 13,000 abducted children and 23,000 women in the preceding two years.
