94 suffer lead poisoning

Nearly 100 villagers in Sichuan Province have been detected with excess lead in their blood despite a metal alloy plant nearby passing a local government inspection last November.

A total of 1,756 villagers in Yujian Town of Longchang County were checked and 94, including 88 children, were found to have high levels of lead in their blood, the China News Service reported yesterday.

Seven children detected with more than 250 micrograms of lead per liter of blood are in hospital while 81 others have been allowed to got home and are on a nutritious diet. Six adults, all employees of the Zhongyi Alloy Co Ltd, are on sick leave for medical observation.

Operations at the plant have been suspended for further investigation.

The inspection by the Longchang environment watchdog in November suggested emissions at the plant were lower than the upper limits in state rules.

Some months ago, a battery manufacturer in Guangdong Province was shut because 44 children nearby suffered lead poisoning.

The battery plant had been honored as a "creditable enterprise" by Guangdong's Qingyuan City government for 10 consecutive years. Several similar scandals nationwide involving thousands of victims, mostly children, also hit the headlines last year.
