9-year-old girl saved in bus hostage drama

Police shot a wanted suspect and saved a little girl this afternoon after she was taken hostage on an interprovincial bus in Nanjing City.

The hostage drama happened at 2:40pm when the police were checking passenger IDs on the coach after they were tipped that four wanted suspects were on board.

Three of the suspects surrendered to the officers but the fourth suddenly grabbed the little girl and held her hostage to resist arrest.

The police immediately cordoned off the scene and gradually saved a number of passengers through negotiations.

The SWAT corps finally pulled the trigger and shot the hostage taker to save the little girl when negotiationsentered a deadlock.

The girl, not identified, suffered slight injuries and was sent to a local hospital. She is in stable condition, police said. The suspect, injured by the police, had been caught with another three of his accomplices, police said.

Several other passengers on the coach, en route from Huainan, Anhui Province, to Xiaoshan City in Zhejiang Province, were injured by the suspects on the coach and have been sent to hospitals.

Nanjing police confirmed the case and said they would release updates later.
