A 18-day trip to Antarctic costs each student $14,800
A high school in Beijing tailored a South Pole adventure next January for some of its elite students, but the expenses will cost the parents of each student 100,000 yuan (US$14,800).
The prestigious Beijing No. 4 High School has planned to pick 20 out of dozens of volunteers to join the voyage to set off on January 24 for Ushuaia, the southernmost city of Argentina.
The activity is organized by China Association for Scientific Expedition (CASE) and Beijing Teenager Science and Technology Club and is open to student volunteers, Beijing Times cited the high school as saying.
"We offer students the opportunity and platform for a scientific expedition to observe field research and spark their interest in natural sciences," said An Ying, assistant headmaster. His school had sent more than 60 students to the North Pole.
Students picked for this voyage should meet the qualifications for English and physical conditions, he said.
The 20 selected teenagers will take a scientific ship in Ushuaia to go to Antarctic. Onboard experts will lecture them about the history of Antarctic, its geography and wildlife during the 18-day journey. They will also make assessment of each student's research assignments, said Liu Li, an executive with CASE.
Liu said the 98,000 yuan cost for each student was mainly spent on air fares, accommodation on the ship, hiring experts, insurance and visa.
The association charges only a small commission, Liu said in response to questions about the high price.
Antarctic cruiser voyage is still rare in China and usually sells at 90,000 yuan for a 20-day sojourn, said a tourism insider.
Students will mainly stay on board during the expedition but with chances of landing on Antarctic and even camping there if conditions allow, Liu added.
