A game of fickle finger
A DEVELOPER in Jiangsu Province tried to boost its business yesterday by holding an unusual money-counting promotion that ended in hard feelings.
The developer's advertisement claimed everyone who participated in a money-counting game would be given the cash he or she tallied in 30 seconds, according to the Yangtze Evening News.
Many people showed up at the appointed time yesterday morning in Yancheng City. The developer provided players with bundles of 100-yuan (US$14.50) bank notes and asked them to count as many bills as they could in 30 seconds with one finger.
A bank clerk counted 11,800 yuan, the most that day, while other players averaged 3,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan, the report said.
But to their disappointment, participants were not allowed to take the money but could use it only as a discount to purchase one of the developer's apartments.
A player identified as Wang told the newspaper he had traveled more than 100 kilometers only to be deceived. Wang said he would never trust the developer, which was not named in the report.
Many participants tried to join the next round as they were told they could sell their scores to apartment buyers. But the newspaper report did not say if anyone was successful in finally cashing in.
