BEIJING police destroyed 489.39 tons of narcotics yesterday in a factory in the capital city's Changping District. The confiscated drugs had a black market value of 260 million yuan, Beijing Times reported.
These drugs were seized in 2008 and 2009 and included opium, cannabis, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and ecstasy. They were fed into a blast furnace 5,000 degrees Celsius in temperature and vaporized instantly without smoke or harmful residue.
Beijing Public Security Bureau Deputy Director Jiang Liangdong said Beijing police captured more than 16,000 drug offenders and suspects in the past three years. All their drugs were stored in a specially guarded warehouse. According to the law, seized drugs shall be stored for at least two years as criminal evidence before being destroyed.
