A mudslide of mine slurry fouls reservoir and crops

THOUSANDS of cubic meters of slurry was discharged from a brimming pool of an unlicensed iron ore mine in central Hubei Province, causing a devastating mudslide and affecting more than 23,000 people.

The slurry poured into the downstream Ma'anguan reservoir in Ma'an Town and caused its hydroelectric turbines to break down. There has been no electricity for two days.

The polluted reservoir also resulted in a shortage of drinking water in surrounding villages and many crops have died in the aftermath, the local Chutian Metropolis Daily reported today.

"A thick layer of chalk-white oil floats in the water. We have to use tons of chemicals to purify the water," said Han Jiukun, director of a local water plant.

The Renhe Mining Company, which caused the pollution, has mined iron ores for months without a license. It's still unclear whether it has halted the operation. Official investigation is ongoing.

Local authorities are cleaning the reservoir and constructing a dam to prevent another flood. Most villagers have received cash compensation, the report said.
