A murder that never happened

A man who says his confession to a 鈥渘on-existent murder鈥 was extracted by torture in Anhui Province two decades ago has taken Huoqiu County Public Security Bureau court to force it to come clean about why he was targeted.

Chen Jiayang, now 78, was accused of murdering a man who had been missing for several days, Zhu Daguo, after a male body, mistakenly identified as Zhu by his family, was pulled from the Huaihe River in August 1995, it reported. The body鈥檚 neck was attached to a rock with a piece of rope.

Chen was arrested because Zhu was last seen in his yard in Nantan Village and claims police tortured him to extract a confession. However, two months later, the 鈥渧ictim,鈥 who Chen said he did not know, returned home after doing a stint as a migrant worker, and he was released.

鈥淚 just want to know why they regarded me as the culprit,鈥 Chen said. 鈥淲hat鈥檚 their evidence?鈥

He added: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 ask for compensation. I want the police responsible for the case to make an apology.鈥

He is demanding that the bureau disclose all information related to the case and identify the officers responsible for the investigation.

Chen decided to demand justice three years ago, and in July 2014, he requested that files related to his case be released by local police. When they did not respond he filed a lawsuit in January last year.

The trial has ended but the verdict has not yet been handed down.
