A nasty finger gesture delays flight for 3 hours
A domestic flight was delayed for nearly three hours yesterday after the captain saw a male passenger giving him an insulting finger and called in the police.
The man looked agitated and gave the China Southern Airline captain a finger when the Chengdu-Beijing flight was still grounded one hour after the scheduled takeoff at 12:20pm.
The cabinet became stuffy because air-conditioning was turned off, said another passenger surnamed Kang. "Some passengers with heart conditions demanded to leave the plane for some fresh air. The male passenger posed the finger at the captain through a window as he got off the plane and the captain called the police," he said.
Chengdu Airport police reproached the man for two hours and allowed him to take the same flight after making sure he had stabilized.
The flight that normally takes no more than three hours finally landed in Beijing at around 8:30pm.
Kang said many passengers believed the captain was making a personal revenge on the man because it was unnecessary to call the police.
An official with the China Southern Airline, the country's largest by fleet size, said the captain is entitled to take actions if he finds any sign of danger to the safety of passengers.
"The male passenger was foul-mouthed toward our crew and was behaving hysteric. The captain believed he was agitated to be a point that threatened the safety of flight," the official told the West China Metropolitan News.
