A second mob boss executed in Chongqing

A CONVICTED mob boss was executed in Chongqing Municipality yesterday. He was the second gang leader put to death in a recent crackdown headed by the municipal authority on organized crime and mafia-like gangs.

The Supreme People's Court approved the death penalty for Wang Xingping as he had been found guilty of heading a mafia-like organization, murder, assault and battery, drug dealing, robbery, illegally trading firearms, blackmailing, vandalism, running casinos and offering bribes, Chongqing's news Website cqnews.net reported.

Wang was also fined 542,000 yuan (US$79,000).

The Chongqing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court found the gang led by Wang dominated Chongqing's Wushan County from 2003 in a reign of terror which undermined local people's economic and social life.

It sentenced Wang to death on April 10 last year while his 18 henchmen received penalties ranging from two years in prison to a suspended death sentence.

About a month ago, another gang leader in Chongqing was executed after being convicted of organizing a crime ring that killed one person and injured eight others over the past 10 years.

Chen Ming, 36, from Rongchang County in the suburbs of Chongqing, was executed on November 26, the same day that the Supreme People's Court had approved an earlier court's verdict.
