ATM exploiter set free on parole

A man who was sentenced for life for taking advantage of ATM malfunction and withdrawing 175,000 yuan(US$25,839.8) illegally has been released on parole.

Xu Ting, a Shanxi Province native working in Guangzhou in South China, won nationwide sympathy after he was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed and got a five-year jail term in the second trial by a Higher Court in Guangdong Province.

Xu was released on parole because of his good behavior in jail, Guangzhou Daily reported today. After being released, Xu stood at the prison gate, bowed three times and thanked the court and the prison. He arrived at his home in Shanxi's Linfen City yesterday.

Xu discovered in April 2006 that when withdrawing cash from an ATM, it gave out 1,000 yuan and only deducted 1 yuan from his account. He repeated the transaction 171 times and got 175,000 yuan illegally.
