Abbott recalls formula made at Fonterra facility
Abbott announced a precautionary recall of its infant formula products in China that were packaged at the same Fonterra facility using the contaminated ingredient.
Altogether 7,181 cartons were identified by Abbott and 112 cartons have been sold to consumers while the rest will be retrieved and destroyed, Abbott said in an email statement today.
The US healthcare and nutrition company confirmed that its Stage 3 infant formula sold in China didn't use the contaminated raw material.
Consumers who bought Similac Gain Plus Stage 3 in 900g tin packages with batch numbers 287834k402 and 287844k402 can have their products refunded or exchanged.
Abbott determined with Fonterra on the night of August 4 that these two batches were packaged at the New Zealand dairy company's facility following the use of affected ingredient without proper sanitary measures.
The stage 3 infant formula is intended for children above one year old, and Abbott said potential health risk will be remote as adult and children above one year old are considered not likely to be harmed by the toxic matter.
