Abducted boy reunited with parents

A BOY in Guangdong Province has been reunited with his family about 50 hours after he was abducted, thanks to the local police's quick action, today's Guangzhou Daily reports.

Xiao Wen, whose age was not disclosed, is one of four abducted boys the Dongguan City police have recently rescued during a crackdown on kid trafficking, the report said.

Xiao was reported missing on the night of April 23 when playing with two boys outside his home in Dongguan City's Xiegang Town.

The other boys were later found at a store 10 minutes' walk from the home. They said a woman had enticed them to the store by offering money to buy candies, and took Xiao Wen away.

Police soon identified the abductor as a woman surnamed Zhang, a 27-year-old native of Xiegang Town, who was caught in Shantou, a neighboring city of Dongguan, on April 26.

Xiao Wen was found at the home of a couple who had agreed to pay 18,000 yuan (US$2,637.62) to Zhang.

After further investigation, police rescued another boy, 5-year-old Cheng Cheng, whom Zhang abducted and sold to a teacher surnamed Peng for 15,000 yuan in October 2007.

Cheng Cheng was reunited with his father 18 months after his abduction following a DNA test.

Police said Zhang abducted the children to make money to pay gambling debts. She asked her father to find buyers for the children by creating stories about them.

She told her father Cheng Cheng was the child of a mistress who didn't want to keep the boy and Xiao Wen was from a financially crippled couple who were unable to afford him.

Dongguan police have rescued 138 children and caught 318 suspects involved in 122 abduction cases of the total 243 reported since 2000.

They formed a special squad in 2004 to investigate child abduction, according to Li Zhuohua, captain of Dongguan police's criminal squad.

Guangdong police have set up a DNA databank for the reported abducted children. Those rescued will be sent home after a careful DNA check, according to official Deng Jianwei.
