A man who abducted a 5-year-old girl on a downtown Beijing street was shot dead by police yesterday after a 50-minute standoff.
The man, 24, grabbed the girl about 11:20am and demanded that police take him to see a woman he had met through the Internet and who failed to keep an appointment to meet him there.
The man repeatedly threatened to harm the girl. A sniper shot and killed him at 12:11pm after he refused to let the girl go. The girl was released unharmed.
