Abe criticized over air defense slander
China has condemned Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for maliciously slandering its air defense zone in the East China Sea.
Abe told a news conference on Saturday that China’s establishment of an air defense identification zone over the Diaoyu Islands was “unjustly violating the freedom of aviation over the high seas” and he demanded Beijing rescind it.
Yesterday, in a statement on the Chinese foreign ministry’s website, spokesman Hong Lei said: “We express strong dissatisfaction with Japan’s leader using an international occasion to maliciously slander China.”
Hong said the zone was in line with international laws and practices and did not affect aviation freedom. “The Diaoyu Islands are an inherent territory of China. Japan’s seizure and occupation of the islands is illegal and invalid,” Hong added.
“The Chinese side took necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. This is totally legitimate and irreproachable. Japan’s attempt to play tricks with concept ... and mislead world opinion is doomed to failure,” Hong said.
Abe and leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations agreed at Saturday’s summit in Tokyo on the need for freedom of the high seas and skies and called for a peaceful resolution of disputes.
Its statement did not criticize China’s air defense zone.
