'Abuse' stepfather detained by police
A MAN accused online of repeatedly physically abusing his six-year-old stepdaughter has been detained by police in Wuhu City in Anhui Province for beating the child.
The stepfather was punished with a 10-day administrative detention and fined up to 500 yuan (US$81.50), local government said yesterday.
The girl's mother had complained to her husband about the child's performance at school on Tuesday, triggering the man to resort to violence, local police said.
Officers did not comment on claims made in an online post that the man had physically abused the child on numerous occasions.
The girl had suffered slight injuries but looks healthy and will receive psychological counseling, a local government official said.
The story first appeared on popular online forum Tianya and went viral on weibo.com on Wednesday.
A web user claimed the girl had told of her plight to a neighbor who had heard her crying for help and begging for food.
According to the post, the child was locked up, repeatedly beaten while her mouth was stuffed with a towel to stifle her cries, and had her teeth broken. She was also forced to sleep on the toilet seat.
Accompanying pictures appeared to show bruises covering her body, which led to police being alerted.
Officers interviewed the girl's mother and stepfather on Thursday.
The man said he beat the girl when she didn't listen to her mother and brought shame to him when she went to neighbors' home to find food.
He admitted hitting the child seven or eight times since last year.
