Abusive tourist guide has her license revoked
A TOURIST guide in Hong Kong who tried, with rude and threatening remarks, to persuade mainland visitors to make purchases has had her license revoked.
A video clip showing Li Hau-chun abusing mainland visitors on a coach for not spending enough on shopping was put on the web and prompted the local tourism industry watchdog, the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, to launch an investigation.
The council said that, after a meeting on Saturday, its compliance committee had decided to immediately revoke Li's tourist guide pass. A fine of HK$47,500 (US$6,113) was imposed on Golden Win International Travel Services Limited, the travel agent which assigned Li to receive the tour group.
The committee considered that Li had breached the tourist guides' code of conduct.
The committee took into account the seriousness of the case, a previous violation of a similar nature by the guide and the enormous damage inflicted by the incident on the image and reputation of Hong Kong tourism, when it unanimously decided to impose a severe penalty.
The committee was also unanimous in its finding that Golden Win International Travel Services Limited had failed to carry out its duties to protect the interests of the tourists and to ensure its guide observed the code of conduct.
Li and the travel company have 14 days in which to appeal against the penalties.
But even if the tourist guide decides to appeal, her pass will remain invalid pending the hearing.
