Academician honor for 35 scientists
THE Chinese Academy of Sciences has elected 35 prominent scientists as academicians, bringing the total number to 714.
The new academicians, elected from 296 candidates, were made up of six from the mathematics and physics division, eight from chemistry, five from the life sciences and medical sciences division, five from the earth sciences division, four from the information technological sciences division and seven from the technological sciences division.
CAS President Lu Yongxiang said 77 percent of the new academicians were under 60. The oldest was 73.
Six foreign scientists were elected academicians, bringing the number of foreign academicians to 56. Four were from the United States, one from France and one from Canada.
