Accused kidnapper denies killing schoolboy

A MAN convicted of kidnapping and killing a schoolboy in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, denied the charge yesterday, saying he was just helping other two men in the crime.

Zou Chun, 39, told the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court that he only helped make phone calls to the 11-year-old boy's parents and didn't kill him or get the ransom of US$500,000 last October.

He said he was forced to follow directions of the other two men, who he never mentioned in previous testimony.

Prosecutors refuted his allegation by showing a handful of evidence including a video tape, photos, footprints in the rented house where Zou held the boy hostage and the car he drove to bring the boy to the house.

The sixth grader of a foreign-language school in Nanshan District was lured into Zou's car on his way home in the afternoon. Zou allegedly abducted him and called his parents to pay ransom. Zou suffocated the boy to death on finding he was trying to flee.

The court didn't hand down a verdict.
