Accused of misuse of public fund, space institute scraps contract

BEIJING-BASED Institute of Space Science and Applied Research said yesterday that it had terminated its controversial purchase contract after the public questioned why it paid 10 times the market price for a printer memory card.

It also said the contract revealed on the Internet was just a transaction procedure and "no payment has been made," the Beijing Times reported today.

The institute, under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, allegedly paid 6,247 yuan (US$978) for a HP 128M memory card in a procurement contract dated November 11. An HP sales agent told the newspaper that the card should cost less than 600 yuan.

A business manager surnamed Wang with the Beijing Huajiang Science Corporation, which signed the contract, said the memory card was a genuine HP product and has been tested by an expert, hence its high price.

The institute added that they needed the memory card to enhance the capacity of their new HP printer which requires an original memory card, the paper said.

Some netizens say the same product can be bought at a price between 100 yuan and 300 yuan from an online store and they fear the public fund has been misused.
