Acid smog hits villagers after blaze
A GAS leak affected villagers on Wednesday evening after a chemical plant fire in north China's Hebei Province. The exact number of casualties is unknown, local officials said yesterday.
The accident occurred when a benzenesulfonic hydroxide workshop of Hebei Jianxin Chemical caught fire in the Lingang Economic and Technological Development Zone of Cangzhou City, according to the zone's management committee.
No deaths or injuries were reported at the site, but residents at nearby Xinzhuangzi Village developed chest problems and nausea after inhaling apparently acid smog. Some have been hospitalized for treatment and observation.
Experts said the fire, which was put out about 9pm, started after sulfur trioxide leaked from a workshop.
