Acid spill threatens river

FIFTEEN tons of toxic acid spilled in Zhejiang Province are threatening a river used for drinking water after a tractor-trailer overturned this morning.

The load of concentrated hydrochloric acid has burned shrubbery black after it spilled along the road linking Baishi and Lecheng townships in Wenzhou City. The acid is spreading toward a river used for drinking water in a nearby town, reported Xinmin.cn today.

Environmental protection and work safety inspection authorities have sent a team to assess the impact of the accident but the report did not say if the acid has contaminated the river.

The road was temporarily blocked after the accident at 6:40am today. The road has been sprayed with water and no injuries have been reported.

Officials are hunting three drivers who fled the scene after the accident without calling police, according a fire fighter named Hu Guangda.

Yellow fumes from the acid are still hovering over the area and Hu said the corrosive fumes delayed the response.
