Actor gets 6 months in jail

A CHINESE actor was yesterday sentenced to 6 months in prison and fined 5,000 yuan (US$800) for a drugs offense.

Zhang Mo, the son of actor and director Zhang Guoli, was found guilty at the Dongcheng District People’s Court in Beijing of allowing three friends to use his apartment as a place to take drugs on two occasions between April and June last year.

He confessed to the crime after being detained by police for smoking marijuana at a different apartment on July 29 last year.

“You indulge yourself too much. We hope you can correct your faults and return to society,” prosecutors said in court.

“I realize it is my fault and I won’t do it again,” Zhang said.

Despite being sentenced just yesterday, Zhang is expected to be released tomorrow as he has already spent almost 6 months in a detention house.

His father Zhang Guoli, who is known for his squeaky-clean image, has not commented on the conviction. He did, however, 3 years ago apologize on his son’s behalf after the younger man was given a 13-day administrative detention for a drugs offense.

“As a father, I feel both heartbroken and guilty,” he said.

Zhang the younger was detained in 2012 after being caught smoking marijuana at home.

Zhang was one of “more than 10” celebrities detained for drug offenses last year in the nation’s capital, Beijing police said.

Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie Chan, was recently sentenced to 6 months in prison for providing a venue for drug users.
