Actor held over police stabbing
AN actor in a popular TV spy drama has been detained over the stabbing of a police officer 13 years ago.
Ji Siguang was apprehended by police in east China's Zhejiang Province on December 7, the Heilongjiang Morning News reported yesterday.
The 39-year-old actor has had supporting roles in more than 30 TV series, including hit espionage drama "Lurk."
He is alleged to be one of four men who robbed and stabbed an officer in Qiqihar, a city in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.
A gang attacked plainclothes policeman Yang Lin and his wife on the night of December 6, 1998, seized his handgun, mobile phone and cash and stabbed him repeatedly. The officer survived the attack.
Three men were arrested soon afterwards.
According to the report, Ji changed his name to Zhang Guofeng and went into hiding in Zhejiang's Jinhua City.
He obtained work as an extra on local film sets, where his talent saw him promoted to supporting roles in numerous TV series. Ji played a variety of roles that included a monk, a eunuch and a spy.
Ji found fame playing a Kuomintang government official named Sheng Xiang in 2009 production "Lurk," which also starred veteran actor Sun Honglei and Yao Chen, the report said.
Set in 1945, the year China fell into a four-year civil war between the Communists and Kuomintang, the drama deals with the shadowy world of double agents.
Ji was shooting a new TV series in Zhejiang when he was apprehended. His role will be taken by an understudy, the report said.
He is currently being held in custody.
