Actor says he still loves his wife

HONG Kong singer-actor Nicolas Tse yesterday admitted that his marriage to fellow entertainer Cecilia Cheung was "in trouble" and that he didn't know what was going to happen next.

It was the first time the 30-year-old had talked publicly about his domestic affairs since rumors intensified about their relationship.

Tse was in Beijing on a movie promotion tour when he was asked to comment about the marriage.

"My marriage has certain problems," Tse said at a press conference to promote his new movie, "Treasure Inn."

But Tse said Cheung had told him she was still in love with him. The previous day she declared her love for him in text messages which also said she missed him.

Tse said he felt exactly the same. "But I am at a complete loss which way our marriage is headed," he said.

"I don't know what the next step is," he said, adding: "No matter the state of our relationship, we will provide a stable environment for our children."

The couple have two toddler sons, Lucas and Quintus.

"My wife and I both grew up in single-parent families," Tse told reporters. "When our first child was born, we wished to avoid a repeat of fate and vowed that we wouldn't have him grow up in a broken family. But now I am puzzled about which direction to take."

But whether the marriage ended or not, the welfare of their sons would be his top concern in any future decision, he said.

There was no immediate comment from Cheung.

The actress was one of the stars involved in the 2008 Edison Chen photo scandal when naked pictures of the actor with the women were exposed online.

The couple's first son, Lucas, had just been born and the incident sparked rumors that the marriage was over. But it survived the scandal, with Tse saying the marriage had passed its toughest test.

Nothing in the future would tear his family apart, he said at the time, and he was determined Cheung was the one to accompany him for the rest of his life.

But in May this year, Cheung and Chen found themselves on the same flight and she changed seats to sit next to him. The two took photographs together and rumors of a marriage in trouble again spread like wildfire.

Late last week Cheung gave an exclusive interview to a Hong Kong newspaper blaming her husband for spreading rumors portraying her as a greedy wife and cold-blooded mother in a bid to gain an edge in any future divorce proceedings.

She depicted him as a father who would play video games rather than play with his children. She said Tse didn't love children at all but only had babies with her to tie her down.

"It's time to reveal the truth," she told the newspaper.

Before the crisis, the star couple had been famous for declaring their love for each other in public and praising each other as loving parents.

Tse, son of veteran actor Patrick Tse and actress Deborah Lee, took home the best actor trophy at the Hong Kong Film Awards in April for his role in "The Stool Pigeon."

Cheung took a five-year break after marrying Tse but returned to the big screen earlier this year in the comedy "All's Well Ends Well 2011."
