Admiral鈥檚 conciliatory note
THE commander of the US Pacific Fleet sounded a conciliatory note toward China yesterday during the last stop of a three-country Asian tour.
“We have much more in common than we do in competition,” Admiral Scott Swift told reporters in Tokyo.
He said progress is being made on US-China relationship, but that friction often overshadows it. He cited a new code to govern unplanned encounters at sea that countries in the region had implemented.
Swift, on his first trip to Asia since assuming command in May, also visited the Philippines and South Korea. The fleet covers an area that encompasses almost half the Earth’s surface.
