Adult orphans in Beijing to get subsidies for independence

BEIJING will help the orphans in the municipality to stand on their own feet after they come of age, an official said in Beijing today.

The orphans over 18, who are able to take care of themselves and can be employed, will get an allowance amounting to 150,000 yuan (about US$21,930) each from the government, said Guo Yue, an official with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs.

"But the subsidies will not be handed out to those orphans directly," said Guo.

"The government will earmark the money to finance the qualified orphans in categories like getting a home and landing a job."

Guo said, the orphans eligible for the subsidies must have been officially registered in the municipal child welfare institutions.

But she declined to reveal the number of the registered orphans.

The Saturday's version of Beijing News reported that more than 100 adult orphans in the municipal welfare institutions are able to live and work independently. The oldest "orphan" is over 50.

The government will carry out the policy with a pilot program in April.
