After 24 years, Lau shows off girlfriend

HONG Kong media went into frenzy when pop icon Andy Lau appeared with his girlfriend in public for the first time in their 24-year relationship, arousing speculation that he may finally wed the "secret woman" behind him.

Lau, one of the most successful entertainers in Chinese communities around the world, met reporters at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia, about 10:35pm on Tuesday with Carol Chu, a 43-year-old Chinese-Malaysian and former beauty queen, whom the star has tried to keep from media exposure.

The couple returned to Hong Kong after attending the funeral of Chu's father in Malaysia. Both were dressed in mourning white and had face masks on.

Lau, who kept a low profile throughout the funeral, was under fire for "hiding" and criticized by many for not admitting his relationship with Chu for so many years.

However, the appearance at the airport is a signal that the 48-year-old celebrity is "going public."

Lau kept Chu close by his side as they made their way through the airport, hand-in-hand. It appeared that Chu had gained some weight and was seen protecting her belly, indicating a possible pregnancy, according to popular Chinese Website portal Sina.com.

Chu remained silent to all reporters' questions while Lau said: "Right now, I would like to take her home to rest, and speak about this later."

Hong Kong media speculated that Lau would marry Chu within 100 days after the funeral.

According to Chinese tradition, offspring should either marry within 100 days after a parent's demise, or they have to wait another three years.

The reason why Lau has been reluctant to publicize his relationship is that Hong Kong's male stars are required by their companies not to get into relationships in fear that it will negatively impact on their public attraction.

Lau is scheduled to visit Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, for a promotion tomorrow and no doubt will be grilled by the media.
