'Aftershock' film wins best picture
A CHINESE film about a family's struggle to cope after an earthquake took best picture award at the 2010 annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards, topping 31 films from 15 countries and regions.
"Aftershock," directed by Feng Xiaogang, deals with the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake that killed at least 255,000 people. It is the highest grossing domestic film of all time in China.
Chen Daoming received the Best Performance award for his role in the film.
"Ultimately, Aftershock won best film because, in my own view, it has everything," said David Puttnam, an Academy Award-winning producer who headed the International Jury for the awards.
"It is incredibly moving and, at the same time, it is an extremely restrained film."
The nominated movies were chosen from 239 entries from 70 countries and regions.
"The sheer variety of films and staggeringly good performances made our task very difficult indeed, in every category," Puttnam said.
