Aftershocks rock Yushu

A magnitude-5.7 earthquake jolted the Yushu Tibet Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province about 10:29am yesterday, the China Earthquake Network Center reported.

The earthquake's epicenter was at 96.3 degrees east longitude and 33.3 degrees north latitude in Longbao Town, 60 kilometers southwest of Yushu's prefecture seat Gyegu Town. But the tremor was felt strongly in Gyegu, Xu Chuanjie, head of emergency rescue section at the provincial earthquake bureau, said.

The quake's focus was 10 kilometers below the Earth's surface.

According to Liu Jie, director of the quake forecast center at the earthquake center, the quake was an aftershock of the magnitude-7.1 earthquake that hit Yushu on April 14.

Liu said it was normal for moderate or strong aftershocks to occur months after a major earthquake.

He added that more aftershocks near Yushu could be expected in the near future.

Yesterday's quake was followed by three aftershocks, which measured magnitude 3.2, 3.8 and 4.1 on the Richter scale. No casualties have been reported.

The April 14 quake which devastated Yushu claimed more than 2,200 lives.
