Ahmadinejad stresses importance of China links

THE relationship between Iran and China will not be weakened by Sino support for the United Nations Security Council's nuclear sanctions against Tehran -- and that view comes from the top.

Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made this clear yesterday during a press conference in Shanghai.

He was in the city to attend the National Pavilion Day celebration of Iran at the World Expo site.

He skipped yesterday's regional security summit in Uzbekistan under the auspices of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that was attended by President Hu Jintao.

Reporters from many parts of the world at the press conference wanted to know Iran's response to China's vote and its reaction to the sanctions.

"Iran has a firm friendship with China and there is no reason to control or weaken the relationship (with China)," Ahmadinejad said.

"We are only confronting the United States administration and we have no problems with other countries."

He regarded Wednesday's resolution of the Security Council as nothing but a piece of "worthless paper," lacking logic and legal value. It could be the "last shot" by the US and the council because it would be ineffective, he said.

He blamed the US administration for "controlling and manipulating the council as a tool to swallow the whole Middle East region with the excuse of punishing Iran over the nuclear-energy issue."

He said Iran would not suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency over the sanctions.

He described the attempt by "immature" US President Barrack Obama as a ruse to distract people's attention from America's own dire political problems.

Ahmadinejad said Obama erred. "He should understand he has only blocked the way to having friendly ties with the Iranian people," he said.

Ahmadinejad criticized US policy as deceitful and misguided and said Obama was naive about foreign affairs.

He said the US president was "particularly in the dark" about Iran and its people.

Ahmadinejad lauded the World Expo for uniting cultures to achieve the goal of "Better City, Better Life."
