Ailing Japanese woman left homeless in Beijing
A Beijing family paid the medical bills of more than 400,000 yuan (US$60,858.8) for an ailing Japanese woman who was left unattended by her son in China, Beijing News reported today.
Last July, Nakajima Fumiko, 92, came to visit her Chinese friends who used to work or study in Japan, but she soon fell sick due to heart disease, lung infection and other old age symptoms. She was hospitalized at Beijing Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital.
A month later, the frail old woman was transferred to the Tiantongyuan Hospital for better treatment. In the next few months she was in and out of the hospital frequently and eventually she was bed-bound.
Her Chinese friends took care of her in turn. A woman surnamed Wen said they found two volunteers from Shaanxi Province to do massage for Nakajima to relive her pain.
Nakajima's only child came to see her once while she lay in hospital and showed reluctance to take his mother home. He soon left and rarely contacted the hospital.
Wen in her 70s said they tried to persuade her son to take care of his mother but to no avail. Wen has reported the case to the Japanese embassy in Beijing and is waiting for a reply.
