Air passenger faces fine for launching escape slides

A young man is facing a hefty bill for his first-ever flight after he accidentally deployed the plane's evacuation slides after it landed in Guangzhou Baiyun Airport last week, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

The man who was flying for the first time activated the slides in a rush to go home last Friday night after the plane had waited for about 1.5 hours on the taxiway to wait for instruction from the air controller.

The crew said the young man pressed a button and all the slides opened with inflation. The sudden opening of the evacuation slides posed threat to the safety for other passengers.

The man's bungling is believed to have cost the airline tens of thousands of yuan to restore the slides in addition to delayed flights afterwards.

The company is demanding a penalty fine of 27,000 yuan (US$4,325) from the passenger who was led away by police for questioning.
