Air quality results called false
THE environmental protection bureau in Handan City in Hebei Province has been accused of placing air monitoring sites in lightly polluted areas and turning a blind eye to the city's severe pollution, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Four of the city's sites are located at a park, a university, a wastewater treatment facility and the city environmental protection bureau, while only one is located near factories.
As a result, the authority continues reporting good air quality while residents experience heavy pollution, Xinhua said.
According to the national rules, air monitoring sites should be distributed evenly in urban areas. Instead, Xinhua said, Handan officials were deceiving residents. The local authority hadn't responded by yesterday.
Handan is among several cities that have been accused of improperly placing air monitoring sites in green areas in order to skew testing results.
In March, Nanjing's environmental authority in Jiangsu Province was accused of placing three monitoring sites for very fine PM2.5 particulates in the Caochangmen cultural and educational zone, at the Xuanwu Lake Park scenic spot, and at Xianlin University Town, a mixed residential area.
Nanjing officials said they picked the three sites in compliance with national standards, according to Yangtze Evening News. PM2.5 monitoring sites should be no major sources of pollution or buildings within 50 meters, said Lu Xiaobo, an engineer with he Nanjing Environmental Monitoring Center.
