Airborne 'prince' steps to Guinness record
CHINA'S "prince of tightrope walking" broke a world record yesterday after spending several hours a day for two months gingerly crossing a wire above Beijing's "Bird's Nest" Olympic stadium.
Adili Wuxor, who has walked about 19 kilometers a day on the rope strung across the stadium, finished his last performance yesterday, breaking the record for longest period of mid-air walking. He walked more than five hours a day for 60 days.
A representative from Guinness World Records presented him with a certificate at a news conference.
"I'm very lucky to have this opportunity to walk in such an iconic structure," Wuxor said. "It's not just a record for myself, but also a record for all Chinese people."
Wuxor has lived in a small cabin adjacent to the tightrope since April, eating and sleeping there while performing stunts for visitors during the day.
He already holds five Guinness World Records for tightrope-related stunts.
An ethnic Uygur from the far western region of Xinjiang, Wuxor says he's ready for a new challenge in October: to walk on a tightrope from an island off the southeastern city of Xiamen to the shore.
