Airline passenger gets 7-day detention for brawl
AN airline passenger was punished with a seven-day administrative detention for his part in a brawl on board a Sichuan Airlines flight from Nanning to Harbin as it made a stop in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.
The passenger's name was not released. Also, another passenger surnamed Zhang was fined 500 yuan (US$79.80). Zhang stepped on the seat of another passenger, Wang Bin, to take a bag from the overhead compartment without taking off his shoes, which triggered the quarrel.
The pair began to beat Wang, causing his mouth to bleed, and also used their fists to strike on-board security guards who intervened. The duo rushed to their seats when passengers called police.
Under national law, anyone who disturbs the order of a form of public transportation can be fined 500 yuan and detained for up to 10 days. Though the two attackers received stricter punishment compared with other cases, some experts said the penalty still wasn't harsh enough.
Zhang Qihuai, a lawyer specializing in civil aviation disputes, blamed the nation for not revising the aviation safety laws for 20 years and argued the authority handed down lenient punishments to the pair.
In August, a fight between two Chinese passengers forced a Swissair plane carrying 200 people from Zurich to Beijing to turn back after it had flown more than six hours.
The two men were ordered by Zurich police to pay the equivalent of 90 days of their income in fines.
