Airlines raise baggage limit for festive season
CHINA'S three biggest airlines have increased the maximum free luggage allowances for some economy-class international travelers over the festive season.
Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines has increased the free luggage quota from 30 kilograms to 46 kilograms for economy-class travelers to Europe. Passengers can check in two pieces of luggage each weighing up to 23 kilograms without extra charge.
However, China Eastern last month lowered its baggage allowance on European flights from 30 kilograms to a single item weighing no more than 23 kilograms.
Economy-class passengers to Japan will see their free luggage allowance increase from 20 to 45 kilograms. A single item can weigh no more than 32 kilograms.
And for those heading to Australia, the quota is increased to 30 kilograms from 20 kilograms.
The allowance for flights to the United States remain unchanged at 46 kilograms - two items, each weighing no more than 23 kilograms.
Air China has increased its free quota by 3 kilograms for flights to Europe, Australia and Asian countries. Each passenger is now allowed one item of luggage weighing up to 23 kilograms.
The limit for the US is the same as China Eastern's - two items, each no more than 23 kilograms.
And China Southern Airlines has increased its 20-kilogram economy-class allowance by between 5 and 10 kilograms on flights to African and Asian countries.
Zou Jianjun, a professor at Civil Aviation Management Institute of China, said it "wasn't easy" for airlines to make such offers as luggage charges provide a useful revenue source.
No dates have been given as to when the promotions will end.
