Airport back to normal after blast, investigation continues
A wheel-chaired Chinese man set off a homemade explosive device outside the arrivals hall in Terminal 3 of the Beijing Capital International Airport yesterday evening. No one except the wheelchair user himself was injured in the explosion.
Dozens of security officers marched out of the crime scene hours after the explosion. They did not say if they were directly involved in the investigation. No details from the airport staff either. But passengers entering and exiting the terminal could feel the intensity.
After the explosion, some passengers were asked to remain inside their aircraft. No one told them what had happened.
A woman who was waiting to receive a visitor heard the explosion. She rushed to the scene and saw smoke.
The area was blocked off for investigation. It was reopened about one hour after the blast. No flights were affected.
The police have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Ji Zhongxing from east China's Shangdong province. He reportedly set off the explosive device at around 6:24 in the evening, Beijing time. He was arrested and then sent to hospital.
Airport operations resumed quickly. But questions remain on how the explosives got through security. So far the air authorities haven't mentioned tightening security measures.
