Airport halts flights due to crack in runway

FLIGHTS at an airport in east China's Zhejiang Province resumed at noon yesterday after a "minor" crack on the runway halted operations, an airport official said.

The first flight, CA1759, from the provincial capital Hangzhou to southwestern China's Chongqing, departed from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport after maintenance workers repaired the runway with concrete, an airport spokesman said.

The airport suspended all inbound and outbound flights after the crack was found on the runway during a routine weekly inspection.

The spokesman would not say how large the crack was, but he described it as being "minor."

Thirty flights were delayed due to the suspension, affecting about 1,000 passengers, the spokesman said.

The airport has only one runway, but a second is under construction.

The spokesman said the cause of the crack was not yet known.

The 11-year-old airport handles more than 3,000 flights a year and it was the first time operations have- -halted due to damage to the runway.

In December and January, the airport was closed temporarily due to heavy snow.
