Airport switches off X-ray body scanners
FULL body X-ray scanners have been shut down at Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Environmental Protection banned the use of such equipment saying “makers, sellers and users of X-ray body scanners should acquire official approval to ensure public safety.”
It added: “Large-scale use of radiation equipment among the public is prohibited.”
According to a report in yesterday’s West China Metropolis Daily, Chengdu East Railway Station was still using a scanner but a notice posted alongside warned children, pregnant women and senior citizens not to go through it but choose manual inspection instead.
The airport has installed walk-through metal detectors at two entrance gates and there will also be manual inspections until a replacement program has been fully implemented.
X-ray scanners are used to screen for explosives but there had been a number of complaints that the airport had not posted warning signs about radiation risks.
Such equipment is not in operation at any of Shanghai airports or railway stations.
