All he needed was love ... and a star actress

Taiwan pop singer Richie Jen says his new film — his first as a director — is like his music: pure and simple.

The 49-year-old wrote, directed and stars in “All You Need Is Love” alongside Shu Qi, of “If You Are The One” fame, who plays a rich girl running away from problems at home. She meets and falls in love with Jen’s character, a struggling inn owner.

Jen says that, just like his music, his film will give audiences a warm, fuzzy feeling.

“I think movies are dream factories. I want to make your dreams come true and feel blissful afterwards,” he said. “My music is very simple, not a big deal, but it is sincere, very pure and moving.”

A megahit single from Jen’s 1996 multiplatinum album opened the door for film and TV roles but he kept alive his dream of becoming a director, often sharing his vision and script ideas with his friend Shu.

He credits her as his muse, but never thought she would be available for his directorial debut. When his management told him she was available he had to work quickly to meet her schedule.

“I only had two months to prepare. Is that enough? Doesn’t matter! Bring it on!” he said.

“All You Need Is Love” is in theaters in Taiwan and China’s mainland.
