Alleged ax murderer planned Chinese New Year slaughter

THE man suspected of killing eight people with an ax in central China on January 4 had planned to chop up another nine he had disputes with, local media reported.

Xiong Zhenlin, 35, was seized by police on Sunday in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. He allegedly confessed he wanted to carry out more attacks on Chinese New Year's Eve, two newspapers in Wuhan reported yesterday.

Police said Xiong had psychological problems but didn't suffer a mental disorder and a psychiatric assessment would not be necessary.

Officers said Xiong lost the will to live as marriage proposals were refused by both his girlfriend and ex-wife. Xiong divorced Liu Jihua but his girlfriend Zhu Deqing was unwilling to marry him. He tried to remarry Liu but she didn't want to. Zhu and her grandson were among the eight allegedly killed by Xiong.

Xiong, a waste recycling station owner in Hubei's Suizhou City, also suffered financial losses due to the global downturn as prices for waste materials nosedived in the second half of last year.

He also had bad experiences with his employees, police said. Six of his alleged victims were his employees.

Xiong told police some of the victims had disputes with him, according to reports. He allegedly said he planned to kill nine others due to various disputes ranging from people gossiping about his affairs to sending him unfriendly text messages, the reports said.

On January 5, Xiong fled as police officers visited his recycling station.

Xiong said he took a long-haul bus to Wuhan and then traveled to Hainan Province. He returned to Wuhan on Saturday and allegedly planned to make a fake ID to evade capture while he would kill the others on his list, but was discovered while taking an ID photo, reports said.

Zhu, 43, and his grandson were found dead in their home in Hubei's Luoyang Town on January 5. Head wounds suggested the attacker had used an ax, a spokesman for Suizhou's public security department said.

Xiong was named a suspect in the case as he had dated Zhu.

Police searched Xiong's junkyard and found six more bodies as well as blood-stained axes and hammers.

The six were identified as Xiong's employees and were all natives of Luoyang Town, aged from 45 to 69.
