Amateurs challenge soccer squad
A GROUP of office workers are recruiting a football team to challenge China's national side.
The five, who work in Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, said they plan to set up face-to-face interviews and selection spots in cities including Shanghai, after online applications.
One of the organizers, surnamed Wu, posted a message on Tianya.cn, one of China's most popular bulletin boards, saying he wanted to recruit a football team to challenge the national side.
China is listed 104th in the latest FIFA world rankings, its lowest position ever.
Since the notice was posted three weeks ago, more than 1,000 people have applied.
"We have applicants from all over the country and most of them were born in the 80s," Wu said. "Some are amateurs, soccer school graduates, high school or college team players, and some are even former professionals."
At least 10 companies have showed an interest in sponsoring the team, but Wu said he didn't want to make the idea too commercial, his aim was to stimulate the disappointing national team.
Dong Hua, a China Football Association official, was quoted by the Tianfu Morning Paper as saying the national side wouldn't play the amateurs.
