American doctors may help Niu Niu
THE two-year-old toddler who survived a 10-story fall thanks to a passer-by's heroism is expected to receive remote consultation from American medical experts in hopes of fully restoring her limb function.
The girl is improving but her left arm remains numb, officials from the No. 2 Hospital of Zhejiang University's School of Medicine told Shanghai Daily.
The hospital said it is discussing details of the consultation with outside medical experts and hopes to hold it by the end of this month.
Zhang Fangyu, better known as Niu Niu, fell off her apartment window in Hangzhou on July 2. She was caught by Wu Juping, 31, whose outstretched arms cushioned her fall and saved her life. Wu was hospitalized for a serious arm fracture.
Niu Niu suffered serious injuries to her spleen, stomach, lungs, kidneys, brain and spine as well as fractures to some limbs. She woke up after remaining unconscious for 10 days at the Children's Hospital at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, which carried out emergency treatment and surgeries.
She was transferred to another hospital on July 25 for rehabilitation of her fractures and left-side paralysis once her condition improved.
"She has been making good progress and can now move her left limbs," said Zhang Jianmin from the hospital's neurosurgery department. "Her vision has improved to the normal level of children at the same age and all fractures have been healed under a treatment plan specially designed for her."
"But her left leg is weak and she cannot stand or walk. Her left fingers are able to bend but not stretch," Zhang said. "This is the major problem for Niu Niu now. We are discussing a new treatment plan."
Wu said: "I hope American doctors can help Niu Niu. I will certainly visit her after I leave the hospital."
