American ‘spy’ detained in China
CHINESE authorities are investigating an American businesswoman on suspicion that she threatened China’s national security, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
Sandy Phan-Gillis, from Texas, has been held by Chinese authorities for about six months, according to a statement from her family that was released online this week.
She is suspected of spying and stealing state secrets, it said.
Hong Lei, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, told a news briefing that Phan-Gillis was suspected of “endangering China’s national security” and is being investigated by relevant Chinese authorities.
The suspect has been permitted at least six consular visits as of mid-September, and she is in a good state of health and is cooperating with the investigation, Hong said.
Phan-Gillis, who has Chinese ancestry and served as the head of the Houston Shenzhen Sister City Association, visited China on a trade delegation with business people and city officials from Houston, Texas, and was detained while attempting to cross from the southern city of Zhuhai to Macau on March 19, according to the statement issued by her family.
She is being held in Nanning, capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Up until Saturday, she had been under house arrest, but over the weekend was moved to a detention center, the statement said.
The US Embassy yesterday declined to comment on the case, citing privacy concerns.
The US State Department, however, confirmed that Phan-Gillis has been visited six times by American consular officers since her arrest, and that it is closely monitoring the case.
The Houston Chronicle reported on Monday that Phan-Gillis is also known by the Chinese name Pan Wanfen.
